Tool Description

DemocracyOS is a citizen engagement tool for Legislation Discussion, deliberation and voting on political proposals. It is a platform for a more open and participatory government. The tool is Open Source and available on GitHub. Users can launch a DemocracyOS page for free from the DemocracyOS website or, from GitHub, the tool can be deployed and hosted relatively easily on Heroku.

The tool allows a user to post a summary of a peace of legislation for political discussion, linking to the full text of the legislation. Participants can vote "Yes", "Abstain", or "No" on an individual motion as well as provide comments. The site is best used in partnership with an official party or government body.

What Makes This Tool Different from Others in its Class?

DemocracyOS is similar to Legislation Lab in that it allows citizens to comment on legislation or other political documents. Legislation Lab is usually deployed with a large piece of legislation, with an individual page dedicated to each article. The tool also links with Facebook, so that comments made on the website can also appear within a person's network and encourage further debate. This option is not available for DemocracyOS. However, DemocracyOS is Open Source and free for use.
