Tool Description

WriteInPublic is a Citizen Engagement service that allows citizens to set up a website to contact local representatives in their country's legislature. It is built off the tool WriteIt, a creation of the Poplus community. The tool has been employed to provide email connections with representatives in countries like Iran and Hungary.

Instructions for Use

WriteInPublic draws names of representatives from a database maintained by MySociety. In order to create a page for a given country or legislature, go to the WriteInPublic website and select the desired country. If the database of contact information does not exist, the user may provide the list of contact information to MySociety, who will update the database powering the site. Specific instructions include:

1) Go to WriteInPublic.com to start creating a website.

2) Create a Google account - users will need to "sign in with Google" in order to create a page.

3) Choose a national legislature to track (e.g. "Iraq" or "Iran) and a subdomain, (e.g. "majlesiq.writeinpublic.com") Note: the legislature you select may not yet have been uploaded into MySociety's database. This can be addressed later, after you have created the site.

4) Go to the "Welcome" screen of your new website and edit the settings, including the default language, email templates, and choosing how many recipients the emails can go to.

What Makes This Tool Different from Others in its Class?

Unlike WriteIt or Democracy.io, WriteInPublic is hosted by MySociety, meaning the user does not need to figure out how to host the website. WriteInPublic also supports right-to-left pages.
